Relating theory to practice is a long-standing concern in the human services. This book offers an integrated approach arguing that theory should be demystifild and made relevant to practice, and conversely that practice should be informed by theory in an open, non-dogmatic way.
An ethic developed from within practice addresses the practical concern of people who are directly involved in it. A distinctive midwifery ethic, therefore, offers a more adequate ethical response for mothers and midwives than traditional bioethics because it is based on the values and beliefs of the women who experience childbirth, as well as those who practice midwifery.
